Torture, Does the end justify the means?

Yesterday the UK law lords have ruled that secret evidence that might have been obtained by torture cannot be used against terror suspects in UK courts.

This ruling clarifies that even when this practice is used in a third country, the evidence gathered will not be valid. This ruling overturns last year’s that stated that such evidence could be used if UK authorities had no involvement.

I praise the UK for at last putting an end to a loophole that so far allowed for all sorts of perversions of the law.

This will hopefully send a clear message to leaders; particularly despotic ones that the west is not prepared to turn a blind eye to how the intelligence is obtained.

Most importantly it shows that we are not prepared to use All means to protect people from terrorism.
In summary it is basically the admission that the end does not justify the means or as reader of the BBC put it: “We are at war with terror but that is no reason to become what we are fighting.”

In this instance there is not even a need to discuss whether the ends justify or not the means. Not only does the end not justify the means but also the means in themselves are flawed and inefficient to achieve the ends.
It is well documented that the tortured captive will always say what the torturer wants to hear and rarely that coincides with the truth.

On a darker note, the US has not yet clarified their stance on Torture. With what happened in Abou Ghraib Prison and recent rumours of CIA activity, it will not be long before they grow a torture CV capable of competing with Pol Poth.
