I was recently reading a short piece by Chomsky and he cites quite appalling statistics on nuclear proliferation. The neo-cons in the White House are pouring billions into a new arsenal of nukes, prominently a new bunker buster generation. The russians had to follow suit and they are now developing their own updated generation of nuclear weapons. The US also wants to place their arsenal in space where it can strike virtually without possibility of defense.

At the end of the Cold War the US and USSR were pushing to nuclear disarmament (USSR initiative, not least for economic reasons). Now were are galloping in the opposite direction.A. It is with the West to stop the Iranians from making nuclear bombs. But, the West also has to take responsibility for the proliferation of nukes, specially after the Cold War, because the russians had to let their best scientists go. Please people, respect the START and the CTBT.
