BRAVE NEW WORLD

French president Chirac has resurrected the Cold War thesis for using nuclear weapons as a deterrent. Chirac says that any country that launches terrorist attacks on France will by atomized. This is great. Now Chirac’s talking! I say fucking nuke them all to kingdom Kong!

There is only a slight problem I would like to ask Mr Chirac in order to be further enlightened on the subject…

How the fuck are you going to determine (and prove) that a terrorist attack was launched by a given country? Do you think that, if a particular country decides to sponsor terror attacks, it is going to advertise its deeds?

Nevertheless, I think I know what Chirac really means: In a Machiavellian way he is just sending an hidden message to Iran. It is a good message. I read it like this: Watch out you mother fuckers! Not only I, Chirac, am a big boy but also I have bigger weapons (at least for now) than you, the Iranians. So I’m forced to say that I completely subscribe to this razor-sharp declaration. It is a good example of real politick put into action. The iranians of course, got the gist of it.

Well, East and West in a duel to the death. Where have I heard that before...? Oops, you can kiss the START treaty goodbye.

Seriously, now. Chirac is getting edgy. The last thing we need is to start a nuclear conflict, for it would be our only... and last. It is with the West to stop the Iranians from making nuclear bombs. But, the West also has to take responsibility for the proliferation of nukes, specially after the Cold War, because the russians had to let their best scientists go. Please people, respect the START and the CTBT. Remember August 6, 1945.

Ah...Student...The good old days when you could nuke and nuke...
I do not think Chirac will ever use nukes. But for me I think that it is important that he says that I can do it. He, unlike Bush and Blair is being rough on the iranian government. It is the only language they are likely to understand.

The Chirac speech is likely to be as much directed to Iran as it is to the US. I was recently reading a short piece by Chomsky and he cites quite appalling statistics on nuclear proliferation. The neo-cons in the White House are pouring billions into a new arsenal of nukes, prominently a new bunker buster generation. The russians had to follow suit and they are now developing their own updated generation of nuclear weapons. The US also wants to place their arsenal in space where it can strike virtually without possibility of defense.

At the end of the Cold War the US and USSR were pushing to nuclear disarmament (USSR initiative, not least for economic reasons). Now were are galloping in the opposite direction.

In what way do you think Chirac is also aiming at the US?

You say "The US also wants to place their arsenal in space where it can strike virtually without possibility of defense." This is very, very dangerous. I have also read about it. But, I am not sure if it is not just a new version of Reagan's star wars program, which, as we know, was more science fiction than anything else. Could you elaborate on that? Maybe a post?

Will do. I will write one early this week, want to do some brief research on the subject first. Chomsky gives a few references I want to track down...
