The use of Reason and reasonable argumentation, the reclaiming of the idea of Progress and the struggle against dogma. In this post-modern world, reinventing Enlightenment is of the utmost importance.

Spot the differences

Meet the DNA of the HIV virus, a global killer. HIV kills by wrecking your immune system. It is transmitted by unprotected sexual intercourse and blood transfusion.

Meet the logo of the World Economic Forum, another global killer. The WEF kills by wrecking your social economy, it starves you to death. It is transmitted by unprotected "free" trade and capital inflows.

A lot can be blamed in protectionist agricultural policies such as the French and Spanish, but who can blame them, at least they have fresh produce in their markets unlike the UK where everything is imported. Protecting your farmers means that third world farmers find it hard to export their produce but in my opinion that does not account for most of the problems.. Poverty is endemic in Africa because corruption is endemic. Take Mozambique: 70% of their GDP comes from donations and yet their minister cut about in top of the range mercedes.

There was an african sociologist, whose name I can't remember, that said that one of Africa's biggest problems was the donations. He said that the west should stop donating. Only then there would be a future for Africa. Do you agree?

It is hardly the donations that stand as a problem. Debt on the other hand, and debt payments, are hemorraging the finances of African countries, to pardon the debt would clearly better their finances. There are many anecdotes that can be told about corruption, the same thing could be said about Portugal and the EU funds, many of which ended up make-believe training courses. Corruption is not an African invention. It is a coping strategy when there are no opportunities for you to better your life, that said, I do not condone it.

The main issue is economic muscle. Trade is never really "free" if that means fair and equitable. Even if trade barriers were lifted it would be like asking the Third World to race the First World, but while the former was walking to the finish line, the latter cruising along in a Ferrari. Hidden subsidies and technological superiority make a unsurmountable difference and allow the West to keep ahead in a liberal world economy. The Davos meeting are a conspiracy of the powerful to bring that world to fruition.

It is more complicated than that, but it is true. African countries are well behind. They have however natural resources that most westerns countries don't such as oil and tourism spots.
I see no solution for Africa, as much as I love the place: crippled with aids; corrupt and with no infrastructures. Is there any way out.
Perhaps a theme for a post Cabral (hint)?
